Artist Statement

Aimee Birnbaum paints dancers and spirits in otherworldly settings that speak to the undergrowth of subconscious desire. In her primeval forests, Arcadian landscapes and magical glades, souls flower, trees sprout breasts and hold hands, and animals seem to speak.

Her dancers could be ancient goddesses, woodland spirits or figments of her imagination. At the root of the work is a physical vigour, sensuality and evocation of movement. As a dancer herself, Aimee understands how the body feels in motion, and her muscular memory informs the anatomy of fleeting movement.

Her paintings explore the space between the physical and the imagined, where the human figure becomes part of an instinctive, dreamlike landscape.
