Artist Statement

I am always trying to find a twist on what initially appears ordinary as daily life evolves. A glimpse of light or a particular set of circumstances may suggest an idea which develops in my mind into a painting. I am inspired by people going about their daily lives, usually within an architectural setting, and aim to engage with the viewer and hold their attention.

I look for collective shapes within the structure rather than trying to compete with the camera. Simplifying the image to three or four collective tonal shapes creates focus, while the selection of light helps establish atmosphere and suggest the narrative. Plein air painting, sketchbooks, my own reference images and studio exercises can all provide starting points. I prefer to suggest and imply, allowing the viewer to contribute to the work. My dictum is: ‘Brain before brush; indicate, do not state.’
