Artist Statement

David Poxon finds inspiration in quiet corners of the world which, for a few brief moments, take on a deeper significance. The commonplace and overlooked become his subject matter as nature slowly reclaims what people have abandoned or cast aside, creating a fragile beauty that is ever changing. He is particularly interested in the relationship between objects and their environment, and in conveying something of the essence of humble, overlooked places and things.

Working exclusively in pure watercolour, Poxon uses a painstaking multi-glazing technique. His paintings begin as drawings made on subject-hunting trips, accompanied by notes and photographs for studio reference. He applies multiple layers of transparent paint to pre-stretched heavy paper on board, each layer delicately modulating the colours beneath. He does not use white paint, instead preserving areas of the paper. The process requires considerable planning and can take many weeks, giving him the time and space to engage deeply with the places and things he paints. For Poxon, watercolour is not a race, but a search for oneself.
