Artist Statement

I normally work on the spot around the streets and landscapes of Granada, responding directly to the light and atmosphere. I make a small sketch before starting to establish simple tonal values, then work using a range of techniques including wet into wet, dry into wet, dry brush, masking fluid and spray. Finished works of 57 × 37 cm are completed over two or three days, as the light permits, while teaching demonstrations and paintings made during travels are completed in two or three hours. Larger works are developed from photographs in the studio.

My flower paintings are arranged under a spotlight, using a small tonal sketch to establish the composition and values. I work with simple shapes, masking areas before submerging the paper in water, then allowing Payne’s grey and other colours to run and develop. Sea paintings are built through dry-brush work, spraying and repeated reworking to create atmosphere. I also undertake commissions and run watercolour painting holidays in Granada.
