Jordan Peers

Biography

Jordan Peers (b. 1991) is a watercolour painter based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. His interests in entomology, ornithology and natural history inform a practice that sometimes blurs the boundary between fine art and scientific illustration.

Artist Statement

Jordan Peers’s practice focuses predominantly on portraiture and the natural world and is firmly rooted in realism. He has worked almost exclusively in watercolour for nearly twenty years.

Regardless of subject matter, Peers seeks to create paintings that are visually beautiful, naturalistic and filled with intricate detail. His interests in entomology, ornithology and natural history allow his work at times to blur the line between fine art and scientific illustration.

In his portraiture, Peers aims to capture the sitter as honestly as possible, highlighting individual characteristics and physical idiosyncrasies that might only be observed by someone who studies them closely. He wants his portraits to be intimate, emotive and truthful, portraying the sitter as they naturally are.

His still life paintings and natural history studies similarly focus on often unseen or unappreciated details. He frequently paints animals that go unnoticed or are rarely observed at close range, seeking to reveal their beauty and wonder. Although some works may initially appear macabre or morbid, he sees them as celebrations of life and a means of achieving a kind of immortality for the subject.
