Richard Thorn

Biography
Richard Thorn was born in Torquay, England, in 1952. His art began with drawing, inspired by a deep love of the countryside and sea, which led him to sketch and paint nature in and around his surroundings. Principally self-taught apart from his schooling and a period at art college, he has exhibited across England, Europe, America and China, with his work held by collectors throughout England. His work was exhibited at the Bourne Gallery in Reigate before John Davies Gallery in Gloucestershire began exhibiting it.
Thorn’s paintings depict the moods and flavours of the countryside, focusing on light and form. He works principally in watercolour, alongside acrylic, watercolour inks and gouache. He received the Schmincke Prize at the RI Annual Exhibition in 2016 for Noon in the Olive Grove (Portugal) and the John Purcell Paper Prize in 2017 for Autumn Chiaroscuro. His book, Down an English Lane, was published in 2016.
Artist Statement
I have always felt a deep connection with the sea and countryside. Painting goes beyond the aesthetic into a more personal realm, where I attempt to capture my feelings and impressions.
‘I like to paint the soul of the scene I’m working on, depicting the essence of that which is before me.’
