Artist Statement
Robin Hazlewood RI is stimulated by the landscape, particularly in France and England, where he mainly paints. Rather than the objects themselves, he is interested in colour, flicker, space, light and the emotional effect of what he perceives, seeking a visual equivalent in paint for these sensations.
Over the years his work has become increasingly abstracted in an attempt to approach the essence of that visual excitement. He works in watercolour for its flexibility, alongside white gouache for opacity. While he once worked directly in the landscape, he now increasingly works in the studio from photographs, colour notes and written observations. He usually has five to ten paintings in progress, choosing each day the one with which he feels the greatest empathy.
