Artist Statement
My current painting explores two key areas: the figure and the urban environment, influenced by my continuing interest in film and television. My focus, through the medium of painting, is on how people interact with the contemporary environment. I show urban life through dramatic colour and shade, using a highly contrasting palette to emphasise shape and form.
I take images with a camera or phone, which are later refined digitally in the studio before I begin painting on paper, board or canvas. Photography is an integral part of my process, allowing me to capture moments and compositions that become the starting point for a painting.
I use water-based media, usually acrylic, and build up the finished piece through multiple layers. During this process, the image can change and develop, with elements added or removed as I work towards the final composition. I am interested in how this process allows the original image to evolve into something that goes beyond the photograph.
